Provenance

Untraced apart from its sale at Sotheby’s on 16 July 1981, lot 78, for £500. However, either this or FT540 is probably BP205, which appears not to have left the Merivale family during the lifetime of Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945).

Comment

This is a view of Chudleigh Rock, near Chudleigh. On the grounds of its subject and compatibility with Oppé’s note, it is quite likely to be BP205; the note reads: “205 & 206. 1787. Loose violet & hatches. Flooded, ink slight.”1 The other drawing of these two is here catalogued as FT539.
