Comment
This drawing, which appears on folio 9 (recto) of the sketchbook, is a copy of Villa Adriana, engraved by Michael Rooker after Richard Wilson. Unlike in other drawings, the pen line is very subdued and the wash has a more painterly quality. Possibly Miss Maingey’s immediate source was a watercolour Towne had made from the engraving, as was the case in another copy made after Wilson (FT860). The dark lines outlining the two central figures may well be Towne’s corrections.
