This drawing was on sale at the Fine Art Society in 1937 and 1938, where it was sold on 20 July 1938 to A. Holman (1895–1974) for £60. The Agnew’s card-index file states that the drawing had a Merivale provenance.

The only known commission Towne earned for a Lake Maggiore view was a 10-guinea view of Lake Maggiore from Lavano for Miss Baring (FT350). This drawing may be the result, although if the Merivale provenance is correct, that seems unlikely.
