Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. It has descended in the family to the present owner.

There is a faint pencil figure ploughing a field at the bottom of this drawing, and others by the wall on the left. This tightly drawn composition of an unknown location can probably be dated on grounds of style to the 1790s.
