Untraced until acquired by Iolo Aneurin Williams (1890–1962) by 1952, and sold by a member of his family at Sotheby’s on 31 March 1999, lot 37, for £1,100 to the present owner within a sketchbook containing FT843 to FT854.

This landscape composition, which appears on folio 5 (recto) of the sketchbook, is a copy of a lost drawing by Towne (FT847a). Not only is it drawn wholly in Towne’s style, but another version of the same drawing survives, also made by a pupil (FT840).
