Untraced until acquired by Iolo Aneurin Williams (1890–1962) by 1952, and sold by a member of his family at Sotheby’s on 31 March 1999, lot 37, for £1,100 to the present owner within a sketchbook containing FT843 to FT854.

This drawing, which appears on folio 6 (recto) of the sketchbook, is a copy after a landscape composition by Towne (FT793). The fact that Towne numbered his drawing “1” may be some indication that it was intended for use at or near the start of a course of instruction, as appears to be the case here.
