Provenance

Untraced until in the collection of C. Mendez of 11 Connaught Place, London, before July 1966, when it was purchased by Colnaghi (D29670), from whom it was acquired that October (as Italian Landscape) by the current owner, the Huntington Library (66.36). Possibly this is BP261, Copy of Engraving signed, sold in June 1938 by Judith Merivale to Squire Gallery, whereafter it is untraced (although it was probably among the gallery’s Distinguished Recent Acquisitions exhibition of autumn 1938 as An Italian Landscape).

Comment

The museum has catalogued this as a composition after Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi, called “Bolognese”, but it does not appear to relate directly to that artist’s work. It may well be a copy of a work from the Carracci school or perhaps something of Towne’s own composition in that style.
