Untraced until 1 May 1964 when purchased from Agnew’s for £60 (as by John White Abbott) by Paul Mellon (1907–1999) who gave it to the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven (B1975.4.982; gift to Yale, 1975).

Comment
This composition derives from Landscape Composition 27E etched by Massi after Annibale Carraci, which Miss Maingey also drew (FT854). In both copies the pupils have taken only the left portion of the drawing, which is itself somewhat at variance from Massi’s etching. Therefore their direct source cannot have been the etching itself but a landscape composition by Towne, based partly on the etching (now lost, FT854a).
