This drawing was on sale at Agnew’s at an unknown date (no.22598), when it was attributed to John White Abbott and given the title Derbyshire. It was offered for sale with the same attribution by Gildings Auctioneers of Market Harborough, and again identified as a view in Derbyshire, on 24 March 2015, lot 414.

The subject is unknown, but the identification with Derbyshire may be due to nothing more profound than the presence of rocks in the right side of the picture. It is nothing like White Abbott’s style of drawing, but is clearly by a less capable pupil of Towne, who may have been copying one of his teacher’s drawings.
