Provenance
Oppé visited Emily Buckingham on 16 July 1915 and noted: “Some sketches of dock leaves, not signed, are probably his [i.e. Towne’s]. He often puts them in his foregrounds. So do others.” Dudley Snelgrove owned a “Study of Mallow on a Bank” in pencil and watercolour, measuring 475 x 340 mm, which was sold at Sotheby’s on 19 November 1992, lot 262, to Christopher Powney. It was catalogued as “Circle of Francis Towne”, although Powney dismissed the attribution as speculative. Just possibly this was one of Emily Buckingham’s studies.
