Provenance
Bequeathed by the artist in 1816 to James White of Exeter (1744–1825), on whose death it passed to Towne’s residuary legatee John Herman Merivale (1779–1844) and his successors. Merivale’s granddaughters Maria Sophia Merivale (1853–1928) and Judith Ann Merivale (1860–1945), both of Oxford, inherited the drawing in May 1915 (BP12). Judith Merivale sold it to Squire Gallery on 19 March 1935 for £4 10s. It was probably bought there by Sir Michael Ernest Sadler (1861–1943) for his son Michael Thomas Harvey Sadleir (1888–1957), who sold it to Agnew’s (no.4001) on 26 October 1944 for £35. On 5 October 1945 Agnew’s sold it to Spink & Son for £42 10s. 6d. By 1951 it was owned by Gilbert Davis (1899–1983), who had probably acquired it from Spink, to whom he sold it on 21 January 1953. On 31 July 1953 Spink sold it for £65 to the present owner, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter (47/1953).
