Provenance

Owned before 1937 by Thomas Andrew (Mayor of Exeter, 1881–82). Dr Robert Alfred Worthington (1878–1945) of Exeter gave it in 1937 to the current owner, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter (106/1937.2). It is probably the picture Oppé saw in ca. 1915 in the collection of Reginald Merivale (1852–1937), which he noted as “Rome walls”.

Comment

This is a version of FT176. It is a faithful copy except in the foliage at the right of the picture, which is much denser and darker than in the drawing.

This picture and its pair, a view of Tivoli also dated 1800, are highly likely to have been exhibits in 1808 as well as 1800, despite the discrepancy between their sizes and the measurements given in the 1808 catalogue (which may have included the frame and were, in any case, inaccurate in the case of another picture by Towne shown in 1812, FT651).
