Joseph Hawksley Elliot was from a long-established family of Sheffield cutlery manufacturers. Although less prominent than other collectors such as Paul Mellon and Sir William Worsley, Elliot amassed one of the largest collections of Towne drawings in the post-war era, most of which was sold at Christie's in 1978.
